Basic Safety Training

Basic Safety Training (BST) is a mandatory course conducted in accordance with the requirements of the Directorate General of Shipping, aligned with International Maritime Organization standards and the STCW Convention.

The course provides essential knowledge and practical skills required for all seafarers to ensure safety at sea. It covers core modules such as Personal Survival Techniques (PST), Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF), Elementary First Aid (EFA), and Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities (PSSR).

Training includes a combination of theoretical instruction and practical drills, preparing candidates to handle emergencies such as fire, abandonment of ship, accidents, and medical situations.

Special emphasis is placed on hands-on training, use of life-saving appliances, firefighting equipment, and adherence to shipboard safety procedures.

Eligibility Criteria (As per DGS Guidelines):

  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • Valid passport
  • Having Indos Number
  • Must be medically fit as per Directorate General of Shipping approved doctor 

Competency Outcome – Basic Safety Training (BST) :

  1. Demonstrate ability to survive at sea in case of ship abandonment using life-saving appliances (PST).
  2. Perform fire prevention and firefighting operations, including use of extinguishers and breathing apparatus (FPFF).
  3. Provide elementary first aid for injuries, burns, bleeding, and medical emergencies (EFA).
  4. Follow safe working practices and maintain effective interpersonal relationships onboard (PSSR).
  5. Respond effectively to emergency situations such as fire, collision, flooding, and evacuation.
  6. Use life-saving and firefighting equipment correctly and safely.
  7. Demonstrate awareness of personal safety, pollution prevention, and hazard control.
  8. Comply with shipboard safety procedures and emergency protocols.
