Refresher in MFA

Refresher Medical First Aid (R-MFA) is a mandatory course conducted in accordance with the requirements of the Directorate General of Shipping, aligned with International Maritime Organization standards and the STCW Convention.

The course is designed to refresh and update the knowledge and practical skills of seafarers in providing medical first aid onboard ships, as required under STCW revalidation norms.

Training includes theoretical revision and practical drills, focusing on CPR, use of oxygen resuscitation equipment, control of bleeding, treatment of burns, fractures, shock, and other medical emergencies.

Special emphasis is placed on patient assessment, emergency response, infection control, and use of ship’s medical stores, along with effective communication with shore-based medical services.

 

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must hold a valid  MFA  (Medical First Aid ) certificate.
  • Valid passport.
  • Must be medically fit as per Directorate General of Shipping approved doctor. 

 

Competency Outcome – Refresher Medical First Aid (R-MFA):


  • Demonstrate continued ability to provide immediate medical first aid onboard ships.
  • Perform CPR and use oxygen resuscitation equipment effectively.
  • Assess casualties and carry out primary and secondary medical care.
  • Control bleeding, manage shock, and treat burns, fractures, and wounds.
  • Respond effectively to medical emergencies such as cardiac arrest, drowning, and trauma.
  • Maintain proper hygiene and infection control practices during treatment.
  • Use ship’s medical stores and equipment correctly.
  • Communicate effectively with shore-based medical assistance services (TMAS).
  • Maintain proper medical records and reporting procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with standards of Directorate General of Shipping and STCW Convention.
