Advanced Training In Fire Fighting

Advanced Training in Fire Fighting (AFF) is a mandatory course conducted in accordance with the requirements of the Directorate General of Shipping, aligned with International Maritime Organization standards and the STCW Convention.

 

The course provides advanced knowledge and practical skills required to organize, lead, and control firefighting operations onboard ships. It covers fire prevention, fire-fighting strategies, command and control techniques, and use of advanced firefighting equipment.

Training includes intensive practical drills and realistic fire simulations, preparing candidates to handle complex fire scenarios such as engine room fires, accommodation fires, and cargo fires. Emphasis is placed on leadership, decision-making, teamwork, and communication during emergencies.

 

Eligibility Criteria (As per DGS Guidelines):

  • Valid passport
  • Must have Minimum 12 months Sea Service
  • Must hold Basic Safety Training (BST) /Ref FPFF certificate
  • Must be medically fit as per Directorate General of Shipping approved doctor 

Competency Outcome – Advanced Training in Fire Fighting (AFF):


  1. Take charge and organize firefighting operations onboard ships.
  2. Demonstrate ability to lead and control fire parties during emergency situations.
  3. Apply advanced firefighting techniques and strategies for different types of fires (engine room, accommodation, cargo).
  4. Use and manage firefighting equipment, including SCBA, fixed installations, and detection systems.
  5. Conduct effective search and rescue operations in smoke-filled and enclosed spaces.
  6. Assess fire situations and take appropriate decisions to control and extinguish fires.
  7. Ensure proper communication, coordination, and safety of crew during firefighting operations.
  8. Implement fire prevention measures and risk assessment onboard.
  9. Comply with standards of Directorate General of Shipping, International Maritime Organization, and STCW Convention.
