Basic Training in Oil & Chemical Tanker Cargo Operations(OCTCO) is a mandatory course conducted in accordance with the requirements of the Directorate General of Shipping, aligned with International Maritime Organization standards and the STCW Convention.

The course provides fundamental knowledge and skills for safe handling of oil and chemical cargoes onboard tankers. It covers tanker types, cargo properties, associated hazards, safety precautions, and pollution prevention measures. Training includes both theoretical instruction and practical exercises, focusing on cargo operations, use of PPE, firefighting, and emergency procedures. Emphasis is placed on hazard identification, risk assessment, and safe working practices to ensure compliance with international safety and environmental standards.

Eligibility Criteria (As per DGS Guidelines):

  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • Valid passport
  • Must hold Basic Safety Training (BST)and STSDSD  certificate
  • Must be medically fit as per Directorate General of Shipping approved doctor
  • Intended to join or serving on oil/chemical tankers

 

Competency Outcome – Basic Training in Oil & Chemical Tanker Cargo Operations

  1. Demonstrate basic knowledge of oil and chemical tanker types, cargo properties, and associated hazards.
  2. Assist in safe cargo handling operations, including loading, unloading, and tank cleaning.
  3. Identify risks and follow safe working practices while handling hazardous cargoes.
  4. Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and safety equipment effectively.
  5. Apply fire safety measures and respond to emergencies related to tanker operations.
  6. Understand and follow pollution prevention procedures and environmental protection requirements.
  7. Assist in monitoring and operation of cargo systems, pipelines, and pumps.
  8. Recognize and respond to hazardous situations, including gas exposure and spills.
  9. Comply with regulations of Directorate General of Shipping, International Maritime Organization, and STCW Convention.
